What are soft skills?

Life is uncertain. However there are skills that we can develop to make the journey easier or more satisfying. Soft skills, have many names. Some call them common sense, or practical wisdom. In professional circles, they are called soft skills or life skills.

These skills affect all aspects of our life, whether in the organisational or personal sphere. Some of them even affect your relationship with yourself. That’s why these soft skills help in personal development, because it helps you become a better person in general.

Personal development also means professional development. Many of the skills that you will come to know during this session will also help you become a better employee, a better boss and a better entrepreneur. Let’s also not forget about social development. These life skills make you also a more conscious, more responsible and more constructive member of society.

Why are soft skills important?

Soft skills cannot be measured with a yard stick. Yet the most successful people in business, politics, sports, etc., have a high degree of soft skills. Soft skills include a mix of social skills, interpersonal communication, know-how, and character traits that help one in their social and professional lives. They are different to hard skills in that they cannot be taught in a holistic way. Soft skills need to be an experience. Therefore we have some activities which will help you understand and experience some of these soft skills.

Professionals within all walks of life, value soft skills because they are signifiers of well-rounded and virtuous people.

How does someone develop these soft skills?

As soft skills are difficult to measure and hard to develop relative to hard skills, we have to ask ourselves how we could acquire them.

One of the best ways to develop soft skills is to meet and overcome challenges. Challenges ask more of us and require that we grow and learn in order to accomplish them. It helps us to find answers to many questions and take action accordingly.

Further, facing and acting successfully on challenges often places us in contact with other people, especially in any explicitly competitive or cooperative environment. Another way is to find a context to step out of our comfort zone. “Thinking out of the box”. This helps us enter and get used to the learning zone, which in turn expands our comfort zone making us the best cookie in the box.

This session will have you embark on a journey requiring  you to fulfil responsibilities, work with others, and learn new skills in order to successfully reach your destination in the future.

For many organizations, hard skills are top of the list when hiring people, as they are specific to the job itself, and are the training or experience needed to perform the job well. While these hard skills are very important to perform in the job, to excel you need to have the experience and understanding of less tangible abilities, like soft skills. After all, it’s not just about having the most talented, qualified employees. It’s about them being able to work together as a team, for the benefit of their own, and the organisation’s, success.
